In sports betting, the public loves a favorite.
“He’s won 5 in a row.”
“She’s the defending champion.”
“They’re the better team on paper.”
We assume that because someone was better, they are better. We assume that past success guarantees future results.
This is a cognitive error.
In any single match, the scoreboard resets to 0-0. The favorite doesn’t get a head start. The champion doesn’t get extra points. The only thing that matters is current form, current health, and current motivation.
When you bet on a favorite just because of their reputation, you are paying a Nostalgia Tax. You are betting on a ghost.
